Raspberry Pi has recognized Flokk’s innovative use of their products with admission to the “Powered by Raspberry Pi” program.
The Flokk handheld is based on the Raspberry Pi Zero W single board computer.
Why does Flokk use Raspberry Pi?
At $15 for processor, memory, and IO, the Pi Zero lets us offer a solution custom built for the ranchers needs that provides:
that cannot be matched by products deployed on consumer devices and platforms, which are too delicate and expensive for the outdoor, all weather, physically challenging reality of ranching.
The Pi Zero offers a 1 GHz quad-core, 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 CPU, on which we run a Linux variant optimized for embedded use.
This allows Flokk to provide sophisticated functionality at the animals side that current products can not. And the flexibility to expand future functionality to meet customers requirements regardless the enabling software.
The Pi Zero and Linux platform provides access to tens of thousands of open source platforms, utilities, and languages, allowing us to affordably deploy sophisticated, proven, stable and actively supported applications and libraries.
Independence from App stores (iOS App Store, Google Play) for our software distribution and updating provides Flokk significant, and irreproducible, cost advantage over phone based solution.
